AP History video # 4

In which John Green teaches you about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and its former colonial overlord England. It started in, you guessed it 1812. The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on Twitter. It's awesome.

  1. In this lesson I learned that The War of 1812 was americas first declared war and that Henry Clay was a very famous war hawk. By the beginning of the war, more than 400,000 settlers had moved west and outnumbered Native Americans by a significant margin. Tenskwatawa was also known as the prophet. William Henry Harrison destroyed the Native American settlement at Prophets Town in the battle know as Tippa Canoe. The Northern states did not really want war, while the southern ones wanted war for expansion. British at one point, seized Washington D.C. and burned the white house. The USS Constitution was nicknamed Old Iron Sides. In the battle of New orleans, Jackson only lost 71 men, while British lost 2,036 men. The Treaty of Ghent ended the war.

  2. I also learned that if the U.S. and Britain had a faster way of communicating with each one another, the war may have been prevented due to the treaty that was issued almost two weeks before the war actually broke out.

  3. Likewise to what Ethan states, the war of 1812 was the first declared war by the Americans. This was because the other wars were declared by British, French, and Indians. The war was basically also for no cause and the impact at the end just resulted in the fighting to stop (Treaty of Ghent). Both the British and American could not compromise on anything. Andrew Jackson did although become a very famous leader from the Battle of New Orleans.

    1. Ironically, William Henry Harrison did become president and gave the longest inauguration speech know to presidency, and unfortunately died 40 days later from sickness.

  9. The war of 1812 was against indians. The northern states didn't want to go to war. The western and southern states wanted to go to war, because mostly those states are farmers. They wanted to get a land expansion. Do you agree with what the west and south states are thinking.

    2. If the South states wouldn't have pushed for land expansion, our agrarian economy never would have grown as much as it did.. and we needed more agriculture because of the huge population growth! The ways the South and West went about enforcing slavery and encouraging war might seem a little selfish and cruel, but the Southern states didn't really have any other ways to increase farming and obtain cheap (or free) labor.

By the beginning of the war, more than 400,000 settlers had moved west from the colonies and outnumbered Native Americans by a significant number. Lots of Native Americans were violent, but some actually took on some of the white's "civilized" practices. Jackson had a battle against British 2 years after a treaty was signed, although he had no way of knowing this, #1815problems?

  11. I learned that the war of 1812 was the United States first war that they declared. The United States wasn't prepared for war against Britain. Britain had more money, ships, and more people. We had one ship called Old Iron Side that cannon balls bounced off of.

  13. The war of 1812 was the first war declared by Americans. They basically started the war for no reason, and it had no significant outcome either. Britain also wanted American ships to stop at British ports before exporting to other European countries. Andrew Jackson became a hero at Battle of New Orleans, by only losing 71 men, while Britain lost 2,036.

    1. There was a slight reason for the war starting, when the British were capturing American ships and forcing the sailors into servitude.

  15. Many of the sailors the british captured were british. Canada would have been a good ally of the United States. One reason for the war was expansion to the west. The war of 1812 was also a war against the indians. Britain collected 40 times more tax than the United States. The Hartford convention wanted to get rid of the 3/5s agreement and require a 2/3 agreement to go to war.

  16. Was there a Reasoning for the war of 1812. It such a meaningless war that they just named it after the year it took place. #warof1812probs By the beginning of the war 400,000 settlers started to move west. As all the other wars included the indians, no matter what side they are on they are always the biggest loser. Weather it is loss of land or tribe members. The battle of New Orleans Andrew Jackson lead his men to victory. He lost 71 men while he created 2036 British casualties, 2 weeks after the peace treaty was signed. #1815probs

  17. Why didn't the native americans trust the americans?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I believe it was due to the fact that we had moved them off their land in the past and the British were using them to plot against us.

    2. Likewise, the americans didn't always trust the native americans because they tried to assimilate them with the white community and culture. They were stubborn and wanted to stick to the traditions they were taught. Another example was that the Cherokee and its surrounding communities started to develop a more advanced society that included methods Americans used during this time. It was like they found Native Americans to be smart and not always uneducated.

  18. Well here we are again fighting Britain again. In the war of 1812. Unlike some other wars that were undeclared, this war was declared. Probably the biggest battle that we won was the battle of New Orleans where we only lost 71 men and made 2036 british casualties.

  19. The War of 1812 was declared for several prominent reasons, one being the British impressment of American sailors, in which the sailors were captured and forced into servitude. The British needed more sailors because of the Napoleonic War. In the wars fought on the Northern continent the British captured Detroit, and seized D.C, burning the whitehouse. The British encouraged the Natives to resist the Americans, several well-known Indian leaders included Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa. The war was ended with the treaty of ghent, not really changing anything important and returning the nations back to the status- quo.

  20. In this video I learned that the War of 1812 was America's first declared war. The Orders in Council were a form of economic warfare, and were a cause of the War of 1812. Better and faster communication could've perhaps prevented the war.

  21. At the very beginning of the war over 400,000 settlers moved westward. You could say we had an advantage over the Natives extremely outnumbering them. The southerners wanted war more because they wanted all the land out west that we could get because of farming, which is kind of opposed to the northerners who didn't care as much. We also lost the white house in this war.

  22. American expansion into western land forced forced native americans to make a decision, fight or flea. Britain encouraged the Natives to resist the Americans. Britain and Canada seized Detroit and burned down the White House.

  23. I learned that the first war that America declared was the War of 1812. It started when the British were capturing American ships and taking the sailors and forcing them to become servants. One of the battles was the Battle of New Orleans, where Andrew Jackson led the Americans to victory, losing only 71 men. Unfortunately, this battle was right after the peace treaty had been made, due to poor communication.

  24. I learned many things in this video, much involving Canada and the Indian tribes west of the colonies. The first war America declared was the War of 1812. Another important battle for the Americans was the Battle of New Orleans, which the Americans won. Two major leaders of Indian tribes were Tecumseh and Tenskwatawa.

  25. Poor Tecumseh.... he was killed. Our capitol was also burned in the war of 1812! That's ok because we still have Andrew Jackson as a future leader.

  26. I learned that the war of 1812 was americas first declared war. Some reasons for the war of 1812 were because of British impressment on American sailors. Another was because of Americas conspiratorial anglofobia.

  27. I learned that Henry Clay was a member of the War Hawks who wanted war. I also learned that before the beginning of the war over 400,000 settlers had moved west of the original colonies. Although a peace treaty had been made, one of the battles was the Battle of New Orleans where 71 Americans died but Andrew Jackson led the Americans to Victory.

  28. In this video, John Green summarized the reasons why America went to war in the war of 1812, some of the battles, and the results. Some reasons we went to war was because of British impressment of sailors and we believed that the British were influencing the Indians. The British, at the time, were also fighting the Napoleonic Wars, so they were a bit preoccupied to put their full forces on us. We expected Canada to join our forces, but they refused because they were satisfied with their relationship with Britain. In the end, the United States didn't have any changes to their borders, and nobody exactly won the war. Jackson did manage to lead a successful battle in New Orleans after the treaty was signed, though.

    1. And another big part of the war dealt with Indians and us moving into their land. Their two leaders, uh... Tecumsah and Tenskwatawa, were the major leaders in the fighting. They didn't appreciate the Americans moving farther into their land and trying to make them a part of their country.
